THE most important Bill Keith recording. If you only can take 10 albums to a deserted island, this one is on top of the list. The first time Tony Rice and David Grisman got together. This album had a gigantic impact on the French bluegrass community.
This album was recorded in France in 1978 and was printed later on CD in Canada. It is not well known in the States. It contains some very interesting instrumentals as Bourree and Phlebitis and Beating around the Bush. But even more interesting is Bill's playing on the songs, solos as well as backup. A load of interesting licks.
Bill's albums are always full of surprises. To me Pentachrome is the headline of this album. On bass is Bill's favourite and legendary jazz bassist, Ron Carter.
Bill's last solo album. Especially the twin banjo arrangements on Liebestraum and Old Hickory drew my attention.
Bill, Tony Trischka and Béla Fleck each contribute tunes to this album. Bill brings his compositions 'Clinging Vine', 'Mead Mountain Blues' and his arrangement on 'Panhandle Country'. As a trio they play 'Bill Cheatham', 'John Hardy' and 'Salt Creek'.
Live show recorded in the UK on November 24 1980. Only available on LP.
This album was recorded in France in 1975 and is very worthwhile listening to. It has Bill Keith with Jim Rooney, but also the cream of French bluegrass musicians of those days.
In 1977, Volume 2 was recorded. This album also includes Mike Lilliy on banjo. These albums have had and still have an important impact on bluegrass musicians in France and other countries.
